La Donaira Lusitanos: Heritage, Philosophy and Performance

The Lusitano horse is one of the oldest riding horses in the world, with a history that stretches back more than 15,000 years. Born on the Iberian Peninsula, the Lusitano is a breed shaped by time, landscape and culture. Referred to by Virgil as the “Sons of the Wind”, Lusitanos have long been celebrated for their intelligence, courage and expressive movement. With a studbook of just over 13,000 registered horses worldwide, the breed remains one of the most exclusive and carefully preserved purebred lines in existence.

At La Donaira, this extraordinary heritage is not only preserved but actively lived. Our Lusitano stud lies in the heart of the Serranía de Ronda, on ancient breeding land surrounded by Neolithic remains and caves with wall paintings over 30,000 years old. Across more than 700 hectares of pasture and holm oak woodland, our horses grow up shaped by the land itself, developing strength, balance and self-confidence from the very beginning of their lives.

More than ninety horses live at liberty across the estate, forming a dynamic and socially rich herd. Foals are born in the field and remain with their mothers until around three years of age, roaming freely through mountains and woodland, learning herd language, physical awareness and emotional regulation in a natural environment. This early freedom forms the foundation of the calm, willing and generous temperament for which La Donaira Lusitanos are known.

A Philosophy of Natural Horsemanship

La Donaira’s journey with horses began in 2005 and has always been guided by the principles of natural horsemanship. This philosophy is rooted in communication, trust and respect rather than force. Working with horses in their own language requires refinement not only of technique, but of intention, emotion and presence.

Under the guidance of our natural horsemanship team, led by Seamus, each horse is handled with sensitivity from an early age. Stress and fear are consciously avoided, allowing confidence and partnership to develop organically. The result is a horse that is responsive, emotionally secure and willing to engage in work as a true partner.

From Liberty to Performance

While freedom and wellbeing form the foundation of life at La Donaira, performance is approached with equal care and intention. Our herd is organised in harmony with the farm: broodmares and youngstock live in semi-freedom; working horses support the regenerative agricultural system; and a select group of Lusitanos are chosen for sport and competition.

Our competition horses are developed according to the principles of Classical Dressage, with health, longevity and serenity at the core of every training decision. Training takes place in open, varied environments; our outdoor arena, round pen and the surrounding dehesa allowing horses to strengthen both physically and mentally.

Mares are carefully selected from some of the most respected Lusitano bloodlines, including Casa Cadaval, Guilherme Borba, Sociedade das Silveiras and Bessa Solar Pinhas. Breeding decisions prioritise conformation, elasticity of movement, temperament and long-term soundness, ensuring each horse is equipped for a sustainable sporting career.

Performance with Purpose

Under the direction of María Culsan and Bernat Barrachina, La Donaira Lusitanos has established itself as a centre for developing functional sport horses capable of competing at the highest level while remaining true to their nature. Our methodology blends classical principles with modern understanding, always guided by the belief that true success is measured not only in results, but in wellbeing, balance and longevity.

In 2025, our horses achieved outstanding international results. Elvis was crowned Spanish Six-Year-Old Champion with an exceptional score of 86.6% and went on to score over 80% at CDI Jardy. Dario LD claimed victories across Spain and Portugal, while Seneca LD was named World Reserve Champion in conformation. Alongside these successes, a new generation of young horses continues to emerge, reflecting the strength and consistency of our breeding programme.

Beyond competition, La Donaira remains a place of connection. Our equestrian centre welcomes guests to experience grounding sessions, classical dressage lessons and trail rides through the dehesa, offering meaningful encounters that respect both horse and human. We also maintain a carefully curated selection of Lusitanos available for sale; partners suited for competition, breeding or the pure enjoyment of classical dressage, always aligned with La Donaira’s philosophy.

At La Donaira, horses are not simply athletes; they are the soul of the estate. Our vision is to continue carrying the legacy of the Lusitano forward; honouring its ancient past while shaping its future through thoughtful breeding, mindful training and performance with purpose.
